I put a lot of effort into preparing for the Science Slam! Honestly, there are only three times in my life that I’ve prepared so well for anything. The first time was at 18 years old when I was finishing high school and preparing for the Gaokao, the Chinese university entrance exam. Secondly there was the time that I did my entrance exam for my graduate studies. And after that there is the Science Slam. I had never had such a good opportunity in my life. This was my first chance to go abroad and to think about my future. It was a big motivation for me.
Meng Xiaotong
Winner of EURAXESS Science Slam China 2016
The most important thing for scientists is to communicate and share ideas. Unfortunately, in most cases people think that researchers a bit boring, that they spend a lot of time in lab. My motive was to change people's perception. The most important factor is that the audience understands the way I tell the science story
Wang Yanting
Winner of EURAXESS Science Slam China 2014
One of the best experiences from the EURAXESS Science Slam was that I got to show what we work on. I was able to tell everyone what our work means to the outside world; how we combine technology, art, and public space together. And you know what, a lot of people turned out to be very interested! They talked to me after my Science Slam presentation, and wanted to find out more about the project. I had a lot of communication afterwards, and several articles were published about the project. So not only it helped my skills but it helped the project itself.

Terms of the competition
All applicants and selected participants agree to the terms below
- The slam presentation in the finals can not be longer than 10 minutes. There will be strict time keeping.
- The results of the final competition will be determined by voting amongst the audience (70%) and a deliberation amongst a jury of experts. In case the voting results in two participants being even the jury will have the final say.
- All voters will need to vote on the bases of the following criteria:
- Accessibility for non-experts
- Conceptualisation of research project
- Presentation style
- Originality & Creativity
- Interest on the research topic aroused among the jury and the audience
- Please keep in mind that the voters will not necessarily be expert in your field so you need to be able to catch their attention with your ability to communicate, which goes beyond simply stating the facts of your research. It could, for example, be smart to try to do something more than just use power point presentation to be successful with reaching the audience. Some of our previous winners relied on the use of probs or creative presentation styles to reach the audience. Almost any style is allowed.
- The research you will be presenting is your own research or research you are demonstrably heavily involved in and that the content of the presentation isn’t aimed at hurting or harming anyone. If these requirements are broken EURAXESS China retains the right to immediately disqualify any participant.
- Selected participants need to send all materials (presentation slides, videos or anything else you want to use) to the organisers within at least 2 weeks before the finals take place. If you have any other requirements (such as the use of probs) please also let us know before that time.
- The winner of the EURAXESS Science Slam China 2023 will receive a voucher for a return ticket from China to a destination in Europe of a choice, valued 2000 EUR. All the finalists will receive a small prize for a value of 100 Euro each.
